The Common Culprits and Why Tubeless Tires Are Different
Most punctures come from nails, screws, or sharp road debris embedding themselves in the tread area. Unlike tube-type tires where the air is contained inside a separate bladder, a tubeless tire relies on the inner liner–a layer of butyl rubber bonded to the casing–to hold air. A nail creates a small hole, but the liner’s elasticity often pinches around the object, slowing the leak. That’s why you can sometimes drive for miles before noticing pressure drop. The downside? That same liner can be damaged by improper repair attempts, turning a small fix into a full replacement.

A proper tubeless repair kit isn't a gimmick; it's a precision set. The Step-by-Step Repair: Do It Right

- Trim the excess – Cut the strip flush with the tread surface. A protruding tail can slap against the road and eventually peel out.
When Temporary Becomes Permanent (and When It Doesn't)
Most industry guidelines (like those from the Rubber Manufacturers Association) consider a properly installed plug as a temporary repair unless combined with an internal patch from the inside of the tire. That said, many riders and drivers run plugged tires for thousands of miles with no issues—provided the puncture is centered in the tread, less than 1/4 inch in diameter, and the tire hasn't been run flat. If you've driven on a flat tire for more than a block, the sidewall likely sustained structural damage. A plug won't fix that. Also, never plug a tire that's been previously repaired within six inches of the old repair.
Practical Tips You Won't Find in the Manual
- Carry a tire pressure gauge – After plugging, inflate the tire to spec, then recheck the next day. A slow leak might mean the strip didn't seal fully.
- Use the reamer aggressively – A half-hearted reaming is the number one cause of failed plugs. You need to force the rubber strip to conform to the hole.
- Practice on an old tire first – Nothing worse than fumbling under the car in the rain. Spend ten minutes in the garage with a scrap tire and a nail.
- Know your limits – If the puncture is near the shoulder or you're running a low-profile tire with stiff sidewalls, call a professional. Some shops will plug from the inside for $20–30.
